The Workforce Solutions Analytics and Tech team is looking for an Applied Science Manager who is interested in solving challenging optimization problems in the labor scheduling and operations efficiency space. We are actively looking to hire a leader to lead our science team. Successful candidates will have a deep knowledge of Machine Learning techniques like Generative AI, NLP experience in applying these methods to large-scale business problems, the ability to map models into production-worthy code in Python or Java, the communication skills necessary to explain complex technical approaches to a variety of stakeholders and customers, and the excitement to take iterative approaches to tackle big research challenges.
As a member of our team, you'll have an opportunity to lead, invent, and work on projects that directly impact over a million Amazon associates. This is a high-impact role where you will lead a team of high performing scientists and engineers who are designing and improving complex labor planning and cost optimization models, recommendation systems, chatbots etc. The successful candidate will be a self-starter comfortable with ambiguity, with strong attention to detail and ability in balancing technical leadership with strong business judgment to make the right decisions about model and method choices.
Successful candidates must thrive in fast-paced environments, which encourage collaborative and creative problem solving, be able to measure and estimate risks, and align research focuses with the Amazon's or Orgs strategic needs.

Key job responsibilities
• You will be a technical leader for the science team with significant scope, impact, and visibility. Your solutions have the potential to impact over a million Amazon associates globally.
• In this role, you will engage in every facet of the process from idea generation, business analysis and scientific research to development and deployment of advanced models.
• Invent and design new solutions for scientifically-complex problem areas and identify opportunities for invention in existing or new business initiatives.
• Successfully deliver large or critical solutions to complex problems in the support of medium-to-large business goals.
• Research, prototype, simulate, and experiment with these models and participate in the production level deployment in Python or Java.
• Lead project plans from a scientific perspective by managing product features, technical risks, milestones and launch plans.
• Lead contributions to organization's roadmaps, goals, priorities, and approach.
• Actively engage with the internal and external scientific communities by publishing scientific articles and participating in research conferences.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- 3+ years of scientists or machine learning engineers management experience
- 3+ years of building machine learning models or developing algorithms for business application experience
- 1+ years of programming in Java, C++, Python or related language experience
- PhD in engineering, technology, computer science, machine learning, robotics, operations research, statistics, mathematics or equivalent quantitative field, or Master's degree and 10+ years of industry or academic research experience
- Knowledge of ML, NLP, Information Retrieval and Analytics

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience building complex software systems, especially involving deep learning, machine learning and computer vision, that have been successfully delivered to customers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $165,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $286,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
